According to the host of a local quiz show, it took the contestants 45 seconds to answer this question:
"How many percent of one peso is 5 cents?"
It reminded me of my son's grade in one of his exams when he was in grade six last year.
His score was 45/50. His grade, as marked by the teacher was 95%.
He was happy, I was not. Why? Because the teacher did not know math and he/she was infecting the students.
Forty five is not ninety five percent of 50.
The grade should be 90 percent!
Apparently, the teacher and other teachers use a table which makes it easy to find the percent equivalent of a raw score.
SOmeone had the idea that if the maximum score possible in an exam is fifty, all you have to do to get the "percent" is to add fifty to the raw score! WRONG!
Thus, 45 + 50 = 95 instead of (45/50)*100 = 90
No wonder many of my students in chemistry have difficulties with calculating percent yields!
